How do you introduce shapes to preschoolers?

Begin to introduce shapes to your preschooler by showing them the flash card of the shape you are working on.  Ask them to say the name of the shape with you and then have them trace the outline of the shape with their finger.  This helps to engage all of your child's senses by seeing, hearing, and tracing the shape.  Once your child can identify the shape on the flash card, play games to help them remember how to recognize the shape such as, "I spy with my little eye, a circle" and ask them to tell you where they can see a circle in the room.  Using flash cards and games will soon have your preschool child recognizing the shapes that are all around them.
