How do you use alphabet flash cards?

Using alphabet flash cards can help to develop the foundation of letter and word recognition.  The alphabet flash cards show both the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet.  Show your child the letter on the card and demonstrate the sound that letter makes.  Ask your child to point to the letter and repeat the sound.  Separate cards into piles of "I know" and "I don't know."  Practice daily with the "I don't know" cards while reviewing the "I know" pile.  This builds confidence for your child and helps with their active recall. It is important to keep alphabet flash card sessions brief and fun for your child.  Use patience and lots of positive reinforcement as your child works on learning this skill.  Throughout your child's day, practice recognizing letters and their sounds. For example, if your child is playing with a toy car, you can show how the word car begins with the letter C.  Have them repeat the word car back to you and find other toys or objects that also begin with the letter C.
