How do you describe rhyming to a 5yr old?

When you introduce rhyming to young children, practice with flash cards and read together often. Show your child a flash card with a word and picture, for example, the word cow. Read the other words listed that also rhyme with cow and then use them in a sentence.  Make practice enjoyable and encourage your child to make up their own silly rhymes.  When your child is having fun with words, they will build fluency as they are playing!  Help them to hear how words such as wow, how, and plow rhyme.  Show them a word that is spelled the same but sounds different and does not rhyme with cow such as mow. Words can look the same but if they are pronounced differently, they may not rhyme.  This is an important concept to repeat with your child as they begin learning how to recognize and sound out different words.
