How many Dolch sight words are there?
There are 220 words that make up the Dolch sight word list. These words were compiled by Dr. Edward Dolch in 1948 and are divided into five groups: pre-primer, primer, first grade, second grade, and third grade. There is a separate group of Dolch noun words, a list of 95 common nouns. The Dolch sight words are based on the children’s reading materials in the 1930s-40s. Many of these words can’t be sounded out and must be learned by sight. That is why they are called sight words. These words are used to teach early readers and reading fluency.
